Share a whiteboard (iPhone/iPad)

Mobile whiteboard lets you capture and share your ideas in real time for more engaging discussions during any join.me meeting hosted on an iPad or iPhone. You can also prepare whiteboards in advance to share during a meeting.

Before you begin: You must be hosting a meeting on an iPad or iPhone.
  1. Tap the Whiteboard icon in the top menu.
  2. Choose the whiteboard you want to share.
    • To share an existing whiteboard, tap the item you want to share.
    • To create a new whiteboard, tap + add a whiteboard.
  3. Tap Share.

Results: All participants see the whiteboard. Only the meeting organizer can edit the whiteboard.

Whiteboard tools

Whiteboard tools are displayed along the bottom of your iPad screen.

Tool name Tool icon Description
Image Insert whiteboard icons or photos. A library of whiteboard icons is provided. Photos can be retrieved from your own photo library. When inserting photos you must allow join.me to access your photos.
Undo You can undo (and redo) up to 20 previous actions while the whiteboard is open.
Select Select objects on the whiteboard.
  • To select multiple objects in a single selection box, tap and drag across the whiteboard canvas.
  • To select multiple objects that are not next to each other on the canvas, double-tap the Select tool to lock it. When locked, the Select icon is underlined.
Draw Tips:
  • Each drawing stroke is separate and unique.
  • To edit a drawing stroke, select the drawing stroke and then tap Draw to change a property (pen type, variable or fixed width, stroke width, opacity or color).
  • As with other objects in a whiteboard, you can move and resize drawings.
Text To create a text box, tap the Text tool and drag to the desired location on the whiteboard. The device's keyboard opens. Additional icons allow you to change font, size, alignment, fill color, text color, outline color.
Line Draw lines and elbows. Additional icons allow you to change line properties (arrow, dashed or solid, color, and more). Lines and elbows can be used to connect objects. See the "Connect objects" section, below.
Tip: Double-tap to lock the tool and select multiple objects. When locked, the icon is underlined.
Eraser Activate the eraser. Once selected, the eraser stays selected so you can delete multiple objects.
Hand Move (pan) the canvas with one finger.
Tip: To move the canvas without the Hand tool, drag with two fingers.
Laser pointer Activate the laser pointer. Tap and hold anywhere to draw attention to a specific part of the whiteboard.
Wrench Select an object and tap the wrench tool to access the following options: Duplicate, Copy, Layers, Properties, Delete.
Note: You can also tap and hold an object to access this menu.
Fit to screen / 100% Due to the whiteboard's "infinite" canvas, you may move so far off screen that you get lost. When this happens, tap Fit to Screen to show the entire whiteboard on the iPad screen. Tap 100% to zoom to 100% resolution.
External Display This icon gives you access to a number of useful options.
  • By default, join.me detects when an external monitor is being used in combination with the iPad. Whiteboard canvas content is projected to the external display, and screen size dimensions are detected and set to fill the screen accordingly (16x9 widescreen versus 4x3).
  • Turn on Toolbars to clone the iPad screen to the external display, including all toolbars, controls, and menus.
  • Use the Fit slider which will allow you to control the overall size of what is displayed externally.
  • Grid displays a transparent grid on the screen, making it easier to align components on your whiteboard.
  • Use Coarseness to set the size of the grid.
  • Select Snap to Grid to automatically align objects to the grid according to the selected Coarseness. All text, icons, and drawing objects are centered on the grid lines that are closest to the center of the object (excluding lines and elbow connectors).

Whiteboard gestures

Use common iPad gestures to get around the whiteboard's infinite canvas. These gestures are always available.

Drag with two fingers
Move (pan) the canvas. This is the same as the Hand tool but is easier to use when another tool is already selected.
Double tap
Access an object's properties
Spread two fingers
Zoom in
Pinch two fingers
Zoom out
Other gestures, such as tap and drag or tap to select, require the Select tool to be active in the toolbar.
Tap and drag
Tap and drag to move objects around the whiteboard, or from the Library onto the whiteboard.
Tap and drag at corner
Tap and drag on the blue dots of a selected object to increase or decrease its size.
Tip: If you see a menu of options (duplicate, copy, etc.) when you intend to tap and drag, try to move your finger as soon as you tap the object.
Note: join.me remembers your current view of the whiteboard and uses it for the thumbnail displayed in the documents and whiteboards portfolio. When you next open a whiteboard, it opens exactly as when you left it.

Connect objects

Use the Line and Elbow tools to connect icons, shapes, images, and text.

Each object has potential connection points around its border. The number and location of the connection points depends on the type of object.

A magnifying glass is displayed when you draw a line or elbow connector towards another object. As you get closer to a potential connection point, the endpoint will “snap” to the nearest connector. The connector endpoint changes from blue to red when it is connected.

  • A blue dot at the end of the line means it is not connected, and a red dot means it is connected.
  • Grouping does not affect connecting to objects in a group.
  • You cannot connect Lines or Elbows to drawing objects.
  • Multiple lines can share the same connection point.

Add an image or logo upon export

When sharing a whiteboard as PDF/JPG, you can add an image or logo from your iPad Photo Library.

The space for the optional logo is 500 x 100. The logo is added left-justified in the header. If the logo height or width exceeds one of those dimensions, the image will resize itself to fit within 500 X 100 while maintaining its aspect ratio.
  1. On any shared whiteboard, tap ... (Tools) in the top menu.
  2. Tap Export this document > Email as PDF (or Email as JPG).
  3. Enable the Add Your Logo setting..
  4. Select an image or logo.
  5. Send the PDF or JPG.
