GoTo Network Test

Overview of GoTo Network Test, what it does, and usage recommendations.

What is it?

GoTo Network Test (GTNT) is a probe embedded in a user's desktop GoTo app or manually installed on any desktop computer. GTNT probes help users see how their network is performing with GoTo Connect.
Tip: For ease of use, we recommend that all users utilize the desktop GoTo app as it will perform network testing and provide a summary without any manual configuration.

How does it work?

A GTNT probe runs in the background and pings the network every 20 minutes to collect MOS, latency, jitter, and packet loss. Or you can run a complete test for more detailed information. The following is an example of data collected:
Data collected Explanation
DNS SRV Lookup GoToConnect's SIP servers are discovered using SRV lookups. This test checks to ensure your DNS server can resolve these appropriately.
Packet Loss Packet loss occurs when packets fail to reach their destination. A high rate of packet loss will affect call quality. We recommend a ratio less than 0.5 percent. To learn more, view What are the requirements for my internet?
Latency To ensure the best user experience, the end-to-end latency of a VOIP system should be no more than 150 ms (including voice encoding, transport and decoding). This test measures the network latency (transport), which should be less than 100 ms. To learn more, view What are the requirements for my internet?
Jitter Voice packets travelling on a network from point A to point B don't always take the same time to travel (and sometimes even arrive out of order). The jitter is a measure of the variance of packet latency. A jitter lower than 10 ms is recommended. To learn more, view What are the requirements for my internet?
Bandwidth This represents the amount of data your network can transmit/receive in a given amount of time. We measure downstream and upstream bandwidth (incoming and outgoing data) separately then simultaneously and should be ≈100kbps up/down for each active call.
SIP ALG Stands for Application Layer Gateway, and is common in many commercial routers. This should be disabled to prevent the router from modifying SIP packets.
Open Ports Tests whether ports required for normal operations are blocked.
NAT Settings NAT binding timeout is the length of time that the router still keeps an inactive UDP NAT session. We strongly recommend a delay greater than 30 sec.
Local Network Information Lists details about your IP address and MAC address.

If you want to monitor devices that do not have the GoTo Network Test integration or if your user doesn't use the desktop version of the GoTo app, they will need to download and install the standalone version GoTo Network Test. To view these user's probes in GoTo Admin, refer to How do I add a GoTo Network Test probe?

How do I use it?

Persona How-to
Users with the desktop GoTo app Run GoTo Network Test from the menu bar in the GoTo app.
Users without the desktop GoTo app Download, install, and run a test using the standalone version of GoTo Network Test.
Admins who manage their accounts in GoTo Admin Add GoTo Network Test probes or view GoTo Network Test probes for troubleshooting or network health queries.
